My entry to Kevin’s NTT this week
Waiting to die

Betelgeuse shines in the sky tonight, as it has for a million years
Marking the shoulder of Orion in a vast sea of twinkling tears
A red giant on it's way to a majestic final grand display of light
Supernova style brightness will be in store for us on that night
Until then it's brightness will continue to light up the night sky
Shining through time until you can see it with your naked eye
A thousand times larger than what we call our warming sun
A reminder of how the vast space of time continues to move on
A man stood in a darkened valley looking into nights vast space
His eyes fixed upon the star that lit up his nighttime gaze
Betelgeuse, a red supergiant now shedding clouds of dust in a spray
Marks the shoulder of Orion in a constellation 700 light years away
