Crystal Ball

Another one for NTT sponsored from the uncontested Mayor of WordPress.

Staring into space, lost in spiritual beliefs
The crystal ball offering no instant relief
Other people telling me how I must think
To disagree is to stir up a religious stink
The masses follow a preacher's spoken word
Telling them soul searching is totally absurd

They give him riches of silver and gold
Never understanding what they are told
But come Sunday morn' , they put on their best
Are the sins forgiven, let's put it to the test
Gossip starts in the chapel and spreads into the heart
The salvation they seek is promised in false arts

I sit alone in my room filled with many colors
And give thanks that my master isn't the almighty dollar
His vision was told and then twisted through time
To confuse or compromise an otherwise clear mind
Believe what you are told and nothing else will do
Do not consider any thoughts coming from inside of you

The beliefs must be followed, I will tell you what they are
And by disobeying me you will never get very far
Burn in hell if you don't listen to what the word is from me
Jesus has given me the only total authority
Other religions are false, they spread their vicious lies
Put more money in the basket, your riches you can't hide

My crystal ball doesn't need weekly pay to save my soul
Only showing me thoughts of reflection to obtain my goal
It's not written words that offer the key of everlasting life
But more the love for each other without causing more strife
My savior has spoken to us all deep inside our own hearts
To get inside heaven spreading peace is a fantastic start

  1. Good poem, Ernie! Although I am a Christian, I understand a lot of the points you explored in your poem, and I agree that there are many preachers out there who present themselves as having a level of authority that they absolutely do not have.

“His vision was told and then twisted through time / To confuse or compromise an otherwise clear mind / Believe what you are told and nothing else will do.” I have seen people cherry pick portions of the Bible and use them out of context to back up certain hurtful or toxic attitudes and beliefs, or purposefully/knowingly interpret a passage with a certain bias already in their mind, then convince others that their interruption is the only correct one, and that they cannot question the matter further, and oh man, do I disagree with that attitude. Basically telling your congregation, “You’re too dumb to think for yourselves, so shut up and only believe what I say, and don’t ask questions,” is sooooo wrong.

And this is especially clearly wrong to me since growing up I had a minister who openly welcomed us asking questions during our pre-confession classes, and in fact dedicated half of our lesson time to an open discussion period where he instructed us to “ask [him] anything.” Sometimes one of us would ask a question that surprised him, and that he didn’t have an answer to in that moment, but he would make a note of that question, and make a point of researching, or asking other ministers, and returning with an answer the next week. So, being scared of questions or becoming afraid of reflecting on your current understanding/interpretation/beliefs is to me a form of immaturity and/or sinful stubbornness.

But, knowing that these sorts of preachers are out there, it makes total sense to me why so many people have left Christianity. It’s impossible to develop a personal faith when you haven’t been allowed to ask questions or feel like you’re able to have your own thoughts.

My cousin left the particular church that she had grown up attending because her boyfriend, who had grown up in a different Christian domination, asked questions about certain practices that they had in that church, and the elders never provided an answer to his valid question. When she told me, I agreed with her decision to leave that church and find a new one to attend.

*looks over her long comment* You clearly wrote some pretty powerful lines, Ernie.

    1. Thank you very much for this interesting comment Nicole. I am a spiritual person and have a strong relationship with our Savor, praying to him before my feet touch the floor in the morning and talking to him throughout the day. His guidance has carried me through some very dark times. I have found that forgiveness is granted without the church being involved and after years of struggling with this I became happy and peaceful in life. I hope not to offend but my beliefs are strong and I am stubborn lol. I don’t disrespect anyone for the choices they make regarding their faith but at the same time when I’m told I have to follow man’s rules over what I believe in I tend to avoid them. All glory to God. 🙏💖

      1. Ah, we are in agreement in our evaluation of man’s rules. :) God’s word trumps man’s opinion. I seek to follow what He has explained to us in the Bible, and attend a church where this is the core attitude. But if my church ever loses sight of this, and puts man’s opinions first, then I’ll have to leave and find a new church. If I attend a church where man’s opinions and rules are at the forefront, I’ve built my house upon shifting sand, and my faith is utterly useless.

I’m glad to hear that your faith in our Saviour has carried you through those dark times. He’s carried me through some rough patches too.

  4. Oohhhh man, Ernie! This one gave me chills! So much “yes, yes, yes,” through this one, from the false premise of forgiveness of sins, to the gossip of the “righteous”, to the paying off the debt of our transgressions. I loved it 👏 👏 👏
“And give thanks that my master isn’t the almighty dollar”

There were more lines than just that one that resonated but man..so true. 🙏 you outdid yourself with this one in my eyes. ☕️ ☕️

    1. Thank you so much Laura. I’ve been weighed down lately with these thoughts and felt what better time to profess them than with this picture. Your words mean so much, again thank you. 💓☮️☕

      1. Of course! Anytime! 😊 Just know they speak to me very profoundly. My grandmother was a devout Catholic and had to put money in that dang box every week. When she was on her deathbed, the priest who had been at the church where she was attending for YEARS said they weren’t able to perform her last rites because it was “too far” out of their way to travel where she was (maybe an extra 5-10 minutes)? Rules are rules I guess! 🙄😒 If only she had known after all those years of giving her money away, anyways…sorry for the long rant 🙏 just know these words mean a lot 🫶 ✨ ☕️ ✌️

        1. Raised Catholic and have tried many different ones but it always comes down to money and their way or the highway to hell. My inner peace is strangely at ease most of the time. No worries about any rant. ☮️☕☕
