A Thanksgiving to Remember: My Family’s Unexpected Moment

For Thanksgiving dinner in 1976 my older brother by three years hosted Thanksgiving at his house for the first time. At the time we were full of Vim and Vigor and spent the night before catching a buzz with friends. I decided to spend the night and help out in the morning getting things set up for the dinner to come.

My brother Andy and I did a wake and bake and enjoyed dancing around the house in a festive mood while his wife Diana worked her butt off in the kitchen. She did a fine job of putting on such a large meal, keeping everyone happy with their favorite dishes and desserts.

After the meal everybody including our mother were in the living room enjoying some relaxing time having after meals drinks and a good time as always. I disappeared and Andy came looking for me finding me in his bedroom loading a bong for my after dinner delight. He flipped out worrying that they would smell the smoke.

As I told him not to worry, he turned around and I slipped past him and walked into the living room with loaded bong and Bic lighter in hand. Now everyone in my family knew I had been enjoying marijuana for a couple of years but never gave a thought to Andy doing such a thing Lord have mercy.

Eyes went wide and gasps were heard in the silence before our mother looked at me and said that she had rolled cigarettes for our dad. Then a brother in law mentioned to my sisters surprise that he had tried it in the Korean War. I put some heat to that magical plant and the whole family watched as I drew long hits, coughing my lungs up and passed it to Andy. He didn’t want to take it so his wife Diana laughed and said “hell yeah”” grabbing it out of my hand.

The family wasn’t upset [besides my brother] and all laughed about it for many years afterward. It was a great tale to tell around family and friends, hell it still is. Since all but one sister is gone on these holiday dazes I thought I would share this story with my family and friends in here.

Thank you for everything and enjoy the family love you have before it becomes memories.
