Earl Scheib owned a paint and body shop over on Montrose Ave. He would advertise his business in the Yellow Pages. A great deal at only $29.99 for a complete paint job sounded to good to be true. Carlton did body work for Earl and would show up to work early with a pack of Winston cigarettes rolled up in his left t shirt sleeve. He would scrawl dirty poems on the women’s bathroom wall for entertainment.

One day Carlton was caught in the ladies restroom, a woman in her late sixties came in wearing a blue shawl and proceeded to slap Carlton across his cheek. She then went into the office and angerly challenged the boss. Bruce’s manager had to mollify her with a deep discount. Even after the discount the lady went home and hand wrote a letter to the editor of the local AM radio station. It was the fastest way to spread news in that era.
